AMMAN (AFP)-the United States presses Governments in the Middle East in order to meet the urgent requirements for reform and to realize that the "climate has changed", said a senior official Tuesday.

"We have seen what had taken place in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Syria, and we have had some demonstrations here, there was a common feature. Leaders must understand that the climate has changed. "

Feltman, who wraps up a three-day visit to Jordan on Wednesday, threw out Syria for cracking on the person protests.

"There are other ways to handle the protests, other than the rotation of the tanks against civilians," he said.

"We would like to see Syria play a constructive role in the region. We have had problems with Syria for a long time ... We are very disappointed with handling Syria peaceful protests. "

Insan human rights groups said the civilian death toll from the unprecedented demonstrations in Syria have topped 607.

Feltman accused Iran "provide non-material aid in Syria in a negative way".

"Iran would like to take advantage of the lack of security in the region. .. any development in the region to its advantage," he said.

Feltman held talks Tuesday with key U.S. ally King Abdullah II of Jordan's reform plans as well as regional issues. He also met foreign minister Nasser Judeh.
